France Intensifies Crackdown on Crypto-Linked Kidnappings Amid Rising High-Profile Cases
French authorities have arrested over a dozen individuals, including minors, in connection with a surge of crypto-related kidnappings targeting high-profile figures in Paris. The incidents appear to be orchestrated by an organized network leveraging social media for recruitment.
Among the most brazen attempts was the May 13 abduction attempt against Paymium CEO Pierre Noizat’s family members, thwarted by bystander intervention. Separately, kidnappers demanded a €5–7 million ransom for the father of a crypto marketing executive before police intervention. Six suspects are in custody for the latter case, while the Noizat investigation remains ongoing.
The pattern follows February’s kidnapping of Ledger co-founder David Balland, who was freed after paying a crypto ransom. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has ordered enhanced protection for crypto executives, with many now employing private security teams.
